Find Support You Can Trust

Finding support is an essential first step if you are afraid of giving birth. Choose a midwife or OB-GYN who listens to your concerns and gives you practical advice.

The goal is to feel supported throughout your pregnancy and listened to, not to be fearless. Talking to someone can also help you identify exactly what you’re scared of and make your fears easier to address.

Learn What to Expect During Labor

Most labor-related fear comes from the unknown. Take time to learn about the different stages of labor and find education classes such as Lamaze or the Bradley method that teach breathing techniques, labor positions, and other relaxation skills.

You can also speak with your healthcare provider about pain management options and create a plan so you feel better prepared.

Prepare Physically and Mentally

Physical preparation, such as walking, prenatal stretching, and pelvic floor exercises, can help you prepare your body for labor. Always consult your doctor if you are unsure about what exercises are suitable during pregnancy.

To mentally prepare, think about what you might need during labor to feel more comfortable and supported. Some women listen to certain playlists, for example, while others might bring personal items like a pillow from home for contractions, a blanket, or a portable fan.
