Seeing a positive pregnancy test can bring many emotions to the surface. You may feel scared, shocked, excited, or a confusing combination of emotions, especially if the pregnancy is unexpected.

There is no right or wrong way to feel after finding out you are pregnant, and taking time to process your emotions is important. Women’s Care Center Parkersburg can help you get answers about your pregnancy, even as you process your emotions and next steps.

It’s Normal to Feel Mixed Emotions

A positive pregnancy test can evoke a range of emotions and raise numerous questions about the future. You may be worried about what life could look like moving forward, especially if you are still in school, facing financial challenges, or are not in a stable relationship.

Try not to judge yourself for how you feel. Writing down your thoughts and concerns can help you process your emotions and identify what support you may need. You may also be surprised to discover the number of resources and support available to you.

Confirm Your Pregnancy

If you think you may be pregnant, the next step is to confirm your pregnancy with lab-quality testing and a limited ultrasound.

A pregnancy test indicates the presence of the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), but only a limited ultrasound can determine:

  • How far along you are (gestational age)
  • Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus
  • Whether the pregnancy appears to be developing

These medical details are important because they can affect both your health and the options available to you.

For example, understanding the location can help identify if your pregnancy is ectopic. An ectopic pregnancy is a medical emergency where the pregnancy develops outside the uterus and cannot continue normally. It is also not resolved by taking the abortion pill.

Take Time to Understand Your Options

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you may feel as if you need to make a pregnancy decision immediately. However, taking time to slow down and gather accurate information can help you feel more informed and confident as you move forward.

Your pregnancy options include parenting, adoption, and abortion. Understanding what each option entails–along with the considerations that come with each–can help you make a decision that feels right for your circumstances.

If you are concerned about finances, housing, or feeling unprepared to parent, remember that support and resources are available to help you.
