When you are facing an unexpected pregnancy, it can be tempting to choose an option simply because it seems like the easiest way to make the uncertainty disappear.
You deserve more than a decision made from panic, fear, or pressure. Being informed means understanding what the abortion pill involves, what you can expect during the process, the risks, what questions you still have, and what the other options are.
Gathering more information can help you feel more confident about whatever decision you ultimately make.
The abortion pill involves two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol.
Mifepristone blocks progesterone, a hormone needed for the pregnancy to continue developing. Misoprostol is taken 24 to 48 hours later and causes the uterus to contract, resulting in abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding as the pregnancy is expelled.
The FDA has approved the abortion pill through ten weeks of gestation. The process can cause additional side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and chills.
Potential risks include heavy bleeding, infection, or an incomplete abortion.
Empowerment also means knowing that abortion is not your only pregnancy option.
If you decide to continue your pregnancy, you can consider parenting or adoption.
Parenting may feel overwhelming if you are concerned about finances, housing, education, childcare, or whether you are ready. However, support and community resources may be available to help make parenting more manageable.
If you do not feel ready to parent but want to continue your pregnancy, adoption is another option to consider. Modern adoption plans can vary, and you can choose how much of a relationship you have with your child and the adoptive family.
Learning about parenting and adoption does not commit you to either option. It simply gives you more information to consider.
Before making a pregnancy decision, it is important to understand:
An ultrasound can provide information about these details and help identify concerns that may require follow-up medical care. For example, an ectopic pregnancy occurs when a pregnancy implants outside the uterus, most commonly in a fallopian tube, and can become a medical emergency if the fallopian tube ruptures. The abortion pill does not end an ectopic pregnancy.
Knowing how far along you are is also important, as the abortion pill is approved by the FDA through 10 weeks gestation. Taking the drugs beyond this timeframe could increase risks. Trying to estimate your gestational age may not be accurate, especially if you have irregular periods.
You may also have experienced a miscarriage without realizing it. Because hCG can remain in your body after a pregnancy loss, a pregnancy test may continue to show a positive result for some time. An ultrasound will look for signs of cardiac activity to see if the pregnancy is developing.
Having a clearer picture of your pregnancy can help you understand your situation before deciding what to do next.
Your partner, family, friends, or other people in your life may have strong opinions about your pregnancy. They may be scared, worried about the future, or convinced that they know what is best for you.
Their feelings may matter to you, but they should not replace your ability to consider your own feelings and circumstances.
Ask yourself whether you feel free to make your decision or whether you are choosing an option because you are afraid of someone’s reaction, worried about disappointing someone, or feeling pressured to decide quickly.
Other people may have opinions about your pregnancy, but you are the one living with the decision.
Having someone you can talk to and receiving reliable information about your pregnancy and options can help you feel more confident about your next steps.
