Ultrasounds
Why Ultrasounds Matter
A limited obstetrical ultrasound is your next step after positive pregnancy testing results. It confirms three important details to determine available options and safeguard your health.
1. How Far Along You Are
An ultrasound will confirm how far along you are in your pregnancy (your estimated due date). This is also known as your gestational age.
If you are contemplating an abortion, understanding this pregnancy detail is essential to protecting your health and safety. The FDA has only approved medical abortion for women through 10 weeks of pregnancy. After this point in pregnancy, the health risks increase.
2. if Your Pregnancy Is Progressing
You could have received a positive pregnancy test and still be experiencing complications such as miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. An ultrasound will confirm if there’s a heartbeat to see whether or not your pregnancy is progressing.
An abortion would not be the method for a miscarriage because the pregnancy has already ended naturally. You would need to talk to your healthcare provider to confirm if any treatment is required to protect your health.
3. the Location of Your Pregnancy
An embryo attaches to the lining of the uterus during a normal pregnancy. In around 2% of cases, the embryo attaches outside the uterus, typically in a fallopian tube. This condition is known as ectopic pregnancy.
Ectopic pregnancy can be dangerous to your health, as a fallopian tube can burst with intense bleeding. Early detection can ensure that women receive prompt treatment and prevent complications.
If you’re considering abortion, an ultrasound will give you the answers you need to be sure you don’t have an undetected ectopic pregnancy.
