Many sexually active people may have STIs and don’t know it. Sexually transmitted Infections (STIs) don’t always come with visible symptoms.

Getting tested regularly is essential to prevent infections leading to serious health complications. We can help.

STIs With No Symptoms

Some of the most common STIs do not have visible or immediate signs. It’s important to get STI testing, as an unknown STI can cause long-term effects and be passed to your sexual partner. You cannot rely on symptoms alone.

Gonorrhea

According to the CDC, most women with gonorrhea do not have any symptoms. Gonorrhea can be treated and cured with antibiotics.

Even with symptoms, they can be mild and mistaken for a bladder or vaginal infection. Women with gonorrhea are at risk of developing serious complications from the infection. Common symptoms may include:

  • Painful or burning sensation when urinating
  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal bleeding between periods

Chlamydia

According to the CDC, most women who have chlamydia have no symptoms. If you do have symptoms, they may not appear until several weeks after you have had sex with an infected partner.

If chlamydia is left untreated, it can affect a woman’s ability to become pregnant. Symptoms for both men and women may include abnormal discharge or a burning sensation when urinating.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis, also known as “trich,” is caused by a parasite. Trichomoniasis can be treated and cured with antibiotics. Symptoms for women with this STI may include:

  • Thin (or sometimes foamy) white, yellow or greenish vaginal discharge that has a foul odor
  • Irritation, soreness or redness around the opening of your vagina
  • Pain or discomfort during intercourse or when peeing

Symptoms for trichomoniasis for men include froth-like discharge from the penis, painful urination, or irritation or itching inside the penis.
