Thinking about talking to her pregnancy options with her partner

Finding out you’re pregnant can feel overwhelming. If you’re unsure what to do next, one of your first thoughts might be sharing the news with your partner.

Talking about your pregnancy can feel intimidating, especially when you’re still processing it yourself. However, having an open, honest conversation can help you feel supported as you navigate your next steps together.

At Women’s Care Center, we know how important it is to have a safe space for these conversations. Schedule a complimentary appointment to learn how you can move forward.

In the meantime, here are some ideas for approaching this discussion.

Choosing the Right Moment

Timing can greatly affect how your partner reacts to the news. Choose a time when you both can focus, without distractions, stress, or interruptions. Consider talking in a private, comfortable space or at home.

Begin by expressing how you’re feeling, even if you don’t have all the answers yet. You could say, “I have something important to share, and I’d really like your support,” or “I just found out I’m pregnant, and here’s what I’ve been thinking about.”

Being Clear About the Support You’d Like

This is your pregnancy, and ultimately, the decision is yours. Still, your partner can play an important role by being a sounding board, helping you research options, attending appointments, or simply being present.

If you know what support you’re looking for, sharing it can help your partner learn ways to offer the help you need. If you’re unsure, it’s okay to say that, too.

Discussing Your Options Together

There are three main pregnancy options—parenting, adoption, and abortion—and each comes with unique considerations. Talking through what each might mean for you individually and as a couple can bring clarity.

  • Parenting means thinking through housing, finances, work, and family support.
  • Adoption may appeal to you if you want to continue the pregnancy but feel parenting isn’t the right fit. You can explore open, semi-open, or closed adoption together.
  • Abortion is a medical decision with risks and side effects. Discussing it openly can help you understand the potential emotional and physical impacts.

Remember, you should never feel pressured to make a decision. You alone have the right to select an option that best aligns with your future and circumstances, and setting boundaries is perfectly acceptable.
