Woman researching whether a pregnancy test can be wrong on her laptop

Taking a pregnancy test when you weren’t expecting to need one brings up a lot of feelings. What’s more, when the result surprises you, it’s natural to wonder whether you can really trust it. The short answer is that pregnancy tests are generally reliable but not perfect. Here’s what’s helpful to know.

At Women’s Care Center, a licensed healthcare professional is available to walk you through your results in a warm, welcoming setting. Our lab-quality pregnancy testing is complimentary and completely confidential. Schedule your appointment today.

How Pregnancy Tests Work

Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called hCG, which your body begins producing after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. When that hormone is detectable, a test will return a positive result. When it isn’t, the result will be negative.

However, several factors can affect how accurate that result actually is.

When a Negative Result Might Not Be the Full Story

Testing too early is one of the most common reasons for a false negative. If you test before hCG has had time to build up in your system, the test may not detect it yet, even if you are pregnant. Waiting until at least a day or two after a missed period gives you a more reliable result. Diluted urine and not following test instructions closely can also affect accuracy.

Home tests also vary in sensitivity from brand to brand, which is another reason results aren’t always consistent. A test taken in the morning, when urine is more concentrated, tends to be more accurate than one taken later in the day.

If your period doesn’t come and you still feel like something is off, it’s worth testing again or coming in to see us.

When a Positive Result Needs a Closer Look

A false positive is less common, but it does happen. After an early pregnancy loss, hCG can remain in the body for a period of time and produce a positive result even though the pregnancy is no longer progressing.

Certain fertility medications, menopause, and some ovarian conditions can also cause a positive reading.

This is exactly why an ultrasound is so important after a positive test. It confirms whether the pregnancy is developing, how far along you are, and where it’s located. A test alone simply can’t tell you all of that.

We’re Here to Help You Understand What’s Going On

Sitting with uncertainty about something this significant can feel agonizing, and you shouldn’t have to do it alone or rely solely on a drugstore test to tell you what’s happening in your body.

At Women’s Care Center, our licensed healthcare professionals provide complimentary pregnancy testing. They can also help determine whether a limited obstetrical ultrasound is the right next step for you following a positive test. This scan will tell you where the pregnancy is located, whether it’s progressing, and how far along you are.

You don’t have to figure this out on your own, and you don’t have to come in with all the answers already. Just come in.
